There are many threads out there, but there are three that are most common/encountered in the fire service:
NH (National Hose) or NST (National Standard Thread)
These threads are commonly referred to as “fire hose thread” because it is very common in US Fire Departments. It is found on fire hose, adapters and fire hydrants. Garden hose thread (GHT) is sometimes also referred to as NH.
NPT (National Pipe Tapered)
NPT is mostly used in plumbing and industrial. It’s recommended to use plumber’s tape or thread-sealing paste. NPT is compatible with NPSM threads if you choose male NPT to female NPSM, whereas NPT vs GHT is not compatible. NPT is sometimes also called pipe thread.
NPSH (National Pipe Straight Hose) or IPT (Iron Pipe Thread)
NPSH is a straight thread and is popular on low-pressure water suction and discharge hose couplings in the fire service.
